The starting point of the design was to create an atmospheric and cozy restaurant and sauna facilities, inspired by the Finnish lake landscape, natural tones and materials, and the building's modern wooden architecture. The elegant building has been designed by KOAN Architecture Ltd. When choosing the materials for the premises, the large windows of the building and the nature flooding from them in each season had to be taken into account. There was no desire to cover the views, so the spaces were to be made clear and spacious, when natural materials were acting as a smooth continuation from the windows to the lake.
The light and dark wood in the architecture of the building was wanted to continue indoors as well. The restaurant on the first floor was designed to have a fresh and bright look to be used from breakfast to dinner time. The spa & sauna and the upstairs event premises wanted a more intimate and soothing atmosphere in dark tones. The downstairs restaurant has seats for 128 people, and the upstairs event and conference facilities can accommodate up to 250 people. In addition, the restaurant terrace seats 290 visitors, and the sauna terrace have seats for 50.
The saunas were implemented in cooperation with Harvia. There are three different saunas in the spa area, each with its own specialty. The spa facilities continue the experiential atmosphere of the saunas, e.g. in the living and cooling area by the fireplace. From the sauna terrace you can also take a dip in both the jacuzzi and the lake pool all year round.
Both the name ‘Viilu’ chosen for the restaurant and the look of the exterior and interior, respect the history of the area, which has served as a former wood industry area. Since the beginning of the last century, there has been a plywood factory in the area, producing plywood from wood veneer.
