Scandic Helsinki Hub, the newest hotel of the Scandic with 352 hotel rooms, embodies the era of modern hotel experience. Built in the 1920s and initially serving as a printing house, the 11-story building exudes history. The hotel was designed to provide an urban and lively environment for the young new generation business traveler with various meeting and working spaces.
In the design, special attention was paid to the hotel's public spaces, which are desired to feel like home, so that each space creates an opportunity to work and invites you to relax. The different eras are clearly visible in the building's massive facades, stairwells and the classic materials of the hotel lobby. Inspired by the original materials, a wide spectrum of broken tones was built, which is combined with modern, playful furniture. The hotel's design, graphics, art and signs refer to the industrial history of the building.
The interior of the rooms was created around a rough and earthy material palette, and the furniture wanted to bring out the layers of the building's different eras. The character of the object's rooms lives on from floor to floor, as almost every room is different. The fixed furniture in the rooms was inspired by the familiar peg-board organization wall from the 50s, which is used to form a set of fixed furniture that can be modified to suit every visitors needs.
The principles of sustainable development have strongly guided the design. There are many original elements that were saved in the building, and for the furniture and textiles, materials have been chosen that withstand wear and tear, age well and allow the patina of time. Products made from recycled materials such as plastic bottles or textile cutting waste have been used in the new acquisitions.
Franz designed all 11 floors of the hotel, including hotel rooms, lobby, sauna & gym, elevator and staircases, event, meeting and coworking spaces, as well as an Italian-style trattoria.
Scandic Helsinki Hub opened its doors in September 2022.
